What is it?

Why do it?
- 16 % of Kenyan adults are illiterate
- 80 % of these persons are women
- Since English is taught in all public schools, most school children can speak it
- Since Kenya is progressively becoming an international country, English is becoming the language of commerce
- Illiteracy is an impediment to well-being in many aspects of life
- limits employment opportunities
- increases likelihood that one’s children will remain illiterate
- Illiteracy inhibits a society’s development
- encourages poverty
- affects quality of life & well-being
- advances subjugation and suppression by others
How will we apply principles of literacy?
- The Center values & encourages excellence in literacy.
- All employees wanting to improve personal literacy have the privilege of attending any adult literacy class the Center hosts
What are our Plans for Community Outreach?
- To Exhibit or model the value of literacy
- To Educate the community through classes in English as a second language (or third in many cases in Kenya as most speak both their tribal language and the national language of Kiswahili)
- To Enable the community student on a practical level of language mastery
What are the Potential Outcomes?
- Increased literacy in the English language
- Positive impact on the well-being of the community member
